MINNEAPOLIS -- Anthony Swarzak, for an afternoon at least, was a starter again. He pitched like he didnt want to go back to the bullpen. The rest of the Minnesota relievers picked him up with a strong performance in his honour. Swarzak pitched five sharp innings in a short-notice start, Oswaldo Arcia homered and the Twins beat the Cleveland Indians 3-1 Wednesday. "I missed that. That was fun," Swarzak said. Danny Santana scored after two of his three hits for the Twins, and five relief pitchers totalled six strikeouts over four scoreless innings. Glen Perkins finished up in the ninth for his 24th save in 27 tries. When Kyle Gibson developed a sore back the day before, Swarzak (2-0) was summoned from the bullpen to fill in. He threw 75 pitches, 15 over the limit the Twins had in mind, but the right-hander allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out three. He was only in trouble once. The Twins were worried about his stamina, but he still hit 93 mph on the radar in the fifth. "When youre in as good a shape as him, and the hard work that he does in that training room and everywhere else in running and throwing, he can handle those things," manager Ron Gardenhire said. Swarzak has made 29 career starts dating back to 2009, but this was his first since Oct. 2, 2012. Such a surprise assignment can be a challenge for a pitcher, less than 14 hours after finding out, but that can also work against an opponent that hasnt fully prepared to face him. "Our hope would be to get the pitch counts up, give him a couple long innings and make them use their bullpen. We couldnt," Indians manager Terry Francona said. Four of Swarzazks five innings were perfect. "I felt like I mightve had a little bit more in the tank," Swarzak said. "Ive always been a guy when Ive started to get stronger as the outing goes forward and have the best stuff in the last inning Ive thrown. In the third, Jose Ramirez poked a perfectly placed double down the third base line to drive in a run. Shortstop Eduardo Nunez made a slick diving stab of Michael Brantleys sharp line drive up the middle, ending the inning with runners at second and third. "Play of the game, hands down. Thats why we won," Swarzak said. How the Twins needed this performance by Swarzak. They gave up 14 runs over the first three innings combined during the first five games of his homestand, losing four of those. After a recent return to respectability, the rotation has begun to backslide toward the level of those rough last three seasons. Trevor Bauer (4-5) struck out seven in six innings, but he lost for the first time in five July starts. Bauer gave up a triple to Santana in the third, followed by an RBI single to Sam Fuld. In the fifth, Brian Dozier drove in Santana with double. Then in the sixth, Arcia hit his two-out solo shot into the right field seats. "It was a fastball, exactly where I wanted to put it," Bauer said. That was Arcias second homer in his last 35 games. The Indians have only one error over their last 10 games. Their hitting with runners in scoring position has been productive lately. Their starting pitching has, too. But they still lost two of three to the Twins, after winning a four-game series at division-leading Detroit to close in on the Tigers in the AL Central race. NOTES: The Twins plan to slide Gibson back into the rotation Saturday if hes ready. "Thats just a hope. You never know with a back," manager Ron Gardenhire said. ... The Indians move on to Kansas City Thursday for a four-game series, with RH Corey Kluber (10-6, 2.95 ERA) starting opposite LH Danny Duffy (5-10, 2.66 ERA) of the Royals. Kluber has allowed only 10 earned runs over his last six turns, totalling 44 strikeouts and only seven walks in 43-plus innings. ... The Twins begin a four-game series here Thursday against Chicago, with RH Phil Hughes (10-6, 4.05 ERA) pitching and RH Hector Noesi (4-7, 5.21 ERA) taking the mound for the White Sox. Hughes and Kevin Correia are the only Twins who have made every start this season. ... Bauer finished six innings for the 11th time in 14 starts this season. Canadian running back Jon Cornish will not play tonight due to general soreness. You can watch the game live tonight starting at 9:30pm et/6:30pm pt. With just three games remaining in the regular season, the Stamps remain the best team in the league with 13 victories in 15 chances. The squad has put together a three-game win streak and has won nine of the last 10 overall, including a 33-23 triumph over Winnipeg on the road last weekend. Against the Blue Bombers, Bo Levi Mitchell was back under center and made an immediate impact with a 25-yard major to Brad Sinopoli in the first quarter. Mitchell finished the outing 18-of-28 for 258 yards and a pair of scores, as well as two interceptions. On the ground, Calgary was again sparked by the play of running back Jon Cornish who carried the ball 21 times for 160 yards and a score. Backup quarterback Drew Tate added a rushing TD of his own for the visitors, but the spotlight remained on Cornish who was named both the CFLs Offensive Player of the Week and the top Canadian. Meanwhile, the Roughriders are in the midst of a four-game slide and have lost five of the last six overall, yet they are still one of three teams in the West Division that has already made the cut for the postseason. During Week 17 action on Sunday, Saskatchewan held visiting Edmonton to only four points in the first half, but then it was the Riders who saw their offense disappear in the second half. The hosts turned to recently signed Kerry Joseph at quarterback and he responded by converting 17-of-36 passes for 213 yards, two TDs and two INTs in the setback. Joseph was second in rushing with a mere 21 yards on seven carries, trailing Will Ford by six yards. This week, the signal caller might have a better chance at reaching the top of the rushing list after it was announced on Tuesday that Ford had been released by the Riders. Ford finished his stint in Saskatchewan with 452 yards and six touchdowns on 85 carries since coming on in Week 5. With Ford now out of the picture, Anthony Allen and Jeromme Messam will get their numbers called more frequently.dddddddddddd Allen, who did not play last week, is second in the league in rushing overall with 849 yards on 156 attempts. He has three 100-yard games in 2014 and has reached the end zone five times. But no matter who is coming out of the backfield for the Riders, all of the pressure again falls on the quarterback, whomever that may be over the next few weeks. So far, the track record for the Saskatchewan passing attack is less than stellar, as the program has the second-fewest passing yards (3,057) and has just as many INTs (15) as TDs (15). Oddly enough, even though Calgary is far and away the best team in the league this season, the Stamps have the third-worst passing attack among the nine teams, at least in terms of yards (3,429). A closer look at the numbers shows a team that is second in TDs (23) and first with the fewest picks (nine). It also makes sense that the Stamps are not the top passing squad in the CFL if for no other reason than they have Cornish on their side. The punishing running back is 23 yards shy of 1,000 for the season, and is fourth in the league in yards from scrimmage (1,110). Calgary won the only other meeting between the teams this season by a score of 31-24 just a few weeks back on the road at Mosaic Stadium. During that Oct. 3 matchup, the Stampeders scored the only points of the first half (nine) and led 24-0 in the third quarter before taking their foot off the gas. Tate hit 16-of-29 passes for 194 yards and two scores, adding two more majors on the ground for the visitors. That was the game where Saskatchewan head coach Corey Chamblin went with his gut and inserted Seth Doege into the starting lineup at quarterback. The move backfired however, as Doege completed just three of his nine pass attempts for 28 yards and three interceptions. Tino Sunseri reappeared for the hosts and connected on all but three of his 19 passes, leading to 289 yards and a score. Sunseri also scored once on the ground in the setback. With the victory earlier this month, Calgarys lead in the all-time series with the Riders now stands at 122-89-9, taking into consideration only regular-season bouts dating back to 1946. The Stamps have won three straight and 10 of the last 12 meetings. ' ' '
